I’ve had thousands of comments on my blog. But my favorite one is from Alan Kirke who, upon seeing a picture of Sharon in a post said something like “the biggest learning is that if dude like you can get a babe like that, there’s hope for me yet”.
Which inspired me to make the little caricature above.
Of course, you’re seeing the best picture of her, and the WORST picture of me. And of course, I didn’t look like that when she married me (but she did!)
Still, it’s a very interesting point.
Joe Jackson noted in a fabulous tune from my youth (“Is She Really Going Out With Him?”):
Pretty women out walking with gorillas down my street
From my window I’m staring while my coffee grows cold
Look over there! (Where?)
There’s a lady that I used to know
She’s married now, or engaged, or something, so I am told
Is she really going out with him?
Is she really gonna take him home tonight?
Is she really going out with him?
‘Cause if my eyes don’t deceive me,
There’s something going wrong around here
But–and for all you suave marketers out there, the point is coming soon–this song got very popular for a VERY good reason.
Because if ONLY alpha males could find such an attractive, smart, supportive mate, then only the absolutely most fit evolutionary specimens would have any reason to hope.
But it’s simply not true.
Dudes like Alan and I take heart when they see “pretty women walking with gorillas” down our streets. It reminds us wit, intelligence, love, and just plain hard work can catch a mate almost as well as a stunning set of biceps and abdominal muscles.
Now, go have a look around the Google Adwords Auction… pretty much any one.
Sure, you’ll find some “alpha males” in the top spots, but in almost every market you’ll also find at least one gorilla holding his or her own. (Try monitoring the auction for a month to see who’s really winning the game)
You’ll scratch your head wondering what they’re doing there, in the midst of all the big players, how on earth did they ever scratch out that territory?
But still, there they are, plain as day, buying clicks every day for months on end.
Because “pretty women” (e.g. the most attractive customers) in the adwords auction are attracted to wit, intelligence, love, and just plain hard work (e.g. research) too.
Which means, you’d don’t have to be a superhero to build your business. Just willing to work a little harder and study a little more, like the big hairy dude in the picture above.
For what it’s worth,
Dr. G

You’re always as young as the women you’re feeling
What a great post!
I like the slant on “pretty women” and attractive customers…
I had to write since Joe Jackson holds a special place in my heart (and other ’80s music where he was hanging out).
I saw Jackson supporting the Rolling Stones on their “last ever” tour in 1982 – unforgettable (and the Stones are still going, so the marketing lesson there is “scarcity”, albeit contrived – we don’t do *that* though – do we…?)
Dr G –
Great metaphor and such a wonderful message – and that’s why we keep coming back and reading your gems of wisdom.
Thanks
ps – mind if I borrow your theme for the hypnosis side of my work
Go ahead Chris
(And thanks)
I had always just assumed that as fantastic as Sharon looks she must have rather poor eyesight. For those of you who have never met her, she actually looks much better than her pictures.
You have made some excellent points about what attracts “pretty women” – and I think the last point is the most important – “willing to work a little harder, and study a little more”.
It just shows nothing is impossible in any facet of life. If you are willing to harder and smarter than everyone else; good things usually come of it. So, Dr. G do you have a research formula getting the best girl as well?
I have heard that women must be pretty and men just little prettier then gorilla. Memories: I was in the navy when my friend get photo of his sister wedding. When I look at first I was shocked. The men was so ugly that first thing come to my mind was, The Beauty and The Beast.
Few seconds later I saw deep intelligence in his yes.
Later I find out that hi is a doctor of science.
In Marketing.
Newbies now days look for that pretty websites with pictures and videos
with ads – MAKE MONEY NOW- and don\’t see the intelligence in ordinary blog.
A lot of pretty women should be wearing glasses, Glenn
Great post. Surprising analogy… but oh so true! This should boost anyone’s confidence.
Very nice Glenn.
I, like you, am living above my means (in the spouse department).
Mostly, I just wanted to say that I love all the great content the both of you put out. I’ve listened and applied much of your information from what I’ve heard from your talk at Fred Gleeck’s with Terry Dean and it’s very refreshing.
Thanks for making the academic so real-world.

It\’s amazing the difference and value you can get from someone on the otherside of the world.
There are lots of emails I delete and a rare few that I open.
And rarer still that I download the content and take to work on a Melbourne construction site listening to a gentleman talk with his wife about concepts of \"laddering\" and why someone searching for \"guinea pig\" is totally different than someone searching for \"guinea pigs\" in my Mp3 player when all the other guys/gals have the radio blarring in the background.
Probably why I have averaged 1.7 for the last few years for my \"buying keywords\" and sell of the excess leads to other companies in different states here in OZ that I cannot fullfill on so as to play adwords for free.
Thank you for the great content and its a pleasure to listen to you and Mrs Livingston
Alan, you’re quite welcome – thanks for the kind words!
